Iona Beach is lovely for wildlife, but not really a beach you'd suntan or swim (not a chance). Behind the beach is a slough with some lovely wetland birds. Along the beach you'll also see some coastal birds.
This beach however is a good place to spend a few hours since you can watch numerous planes landing and taking off from the Vancouver International Airport. It is a great place to walk your dog and to explore.
While it might not at first seem desirable, walking out along the causeway which holds the Vancouver sewer outflow pipe is a fantastic walk. The causeway goes out about 4 kilometers and once at the end gives a 360 view of Georgian Straight, the North Shore Mountains, Mount Baker, and across to Vancouver Island. In the morning it is a breath taking view.
